Autumn date ideas in Brighton and along the Sussex coast

Golden walks on the Downs, a stroll along the seafront and somewhere warm for a coffee afterwards.

The summer crowds have thinned out, the light turns soft and golden, and the Sussex coast feels a little calmer. For me, autumn is one of the best times of year for a first date. Nobody is melting on the pebbles, there's usually a good excuse for a warm drink, and a walk gives you something to talk about. Here are some ideas that work well from October onwards.

Walks with a view

Devil's Dyke and Ditchling Beacon

Both give you a big sweep of the South Downs, and both are wonderful on a clear autumn day. They're also exposed, so wrap up and check the forecast before you set off. Plan how you'll get there and back, and keep the walk short enough that you can both change your mind.

Stanmer Park

Woods, open lawns and plenty of paths, all close to the city. It's a gentle, unhurried place to walk and talk, and easy to shorten if the weather turns.

Lewes and the River Ouse

Wander the steep old streets, then follow the river for a quieter stretch. It's a short train ride from Brighton, so check the times before you go.

Along the seafront

The Brighton and Hove promenade is at its best on a bright autumn afternoon, with fewer people and a fresh breeze. Walk from the pier towards Hove, then find a café for a hot drink. If you'd like somewhere even quieter, Shoreham beach is a short trip along the coast.

Somewhere warm when the rain arrives

Autumn weather changes quickly, so have a plan B. Brighton Museum and Art Gallery is warm, dry and full of things to talk about, and the Royal Pavilion gardens are lovely for a stroll between showers. The Lanes and North Laine are full of cafés to duck into. Check opening times and prices before you go.

Further along the coast

If you live east of Brighton, the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and the Towner gallery in Eastbourne both make a good setting for a relaxed afternoon, with the sea close by. Look up opening times first, and pick a spot you can both reach easily.

A few autumn tips

  • Plan for the dark. The evenings draw in fast, so a lunchtime or early afternoon date is often easier.
  • Dress in layers. The weather can swing from sunny to blustery in an hour.
  • Keep it short. A coffee...then a walk, and see how you feel.
  • Stay safe. Meet somewhere public, make your own way there and tell a friend. Our guide to dating safely has more.
