A drink in the pub is fine. But Brighton has a seafront, a pier, the South Downs on the doorstep and a historic old town full of narrow lanes, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early or stretch out if it's going well. Here are twelve ideas in and around Brighton.
By the sea
1. The seafront and the pier
Walk along the promenade by Brighton Palace Pier, then keep going towards Hove. It's flat, easy and there's always a café or a bench nearby. Remember the beach is pebbles, so sensible shoes help if you fancy a paddle.
2. Hove seafront and the lawns
A little quieter than Brighton, with wide lawns, beach huts and plenty of space to talk. A good spot for a coffee and a slow walk.
3. Shoreham-by-Sea and the river
Walk along the River Adur and look out at the harbour. A calm, easy first date that's a short train ride from Brighton. Check the times before you go.
4. The Seven Sisters at Cuckmere Haven
A flat riverside path leads to the beach below the white chalk cliffs. Stay well back from the cliff edges, check the tide and the weather before you set off, and wear proper shoes.
Out in the Downs
5. Devil's Dyke
A big view from the top of the Downs and plenty of room to wander. Check the weather and plan how you'll get there and back before you set off.
6. Stanmer Park
Woods, open lawns and a café, all close to the city. An easy, unhurried walk that's simple to shorten or extend.
7. Lewes
Wander up the steep old streets to the castle, browse the independent shops and find a café or a pub with a fire. Lewes is a short train ride from Brighton, so check the times first.
Culture and a bit of shelter
8. The Lanes and North Laine
Narrow passages, independent shops and cafés, with something to look at round every corner. Easy to start, easy to end and full of things to talk about.
9. The Royal Pavilion and its gardens
The gardens are a lovely place to stroll, and the Pavilion's domes make a fine backdrop. Check opening times and ticket prices if you'd like to go inside.
10. Brighton Museum and Art Gallery
Warm and dry inside, with plenty to talk about. Check opening times and entry prices before you go.
Keep it simple
11. Fish and chips on the beach
Short, sweet and easy to extend if it's going well. Keep an eye on the seagulls.
12. A show at the Theatre Royal or the Dome
From theatre to music and comedy, there's usually something on. It gives you something to talk about on the way home.
A few tips before you go
- Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
- Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
- Check the weather and opening times before you set off.
- Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
